The Blountstown Tigers and the undefeated Taylor County Bulldogs had a defensive battle in the first half Friday night at Bowles Field. The 4-0 Bulldogs were fresh off a big win over Wakulla. The 2-0 Tigers Tigers were returning for their first action since a bye week and a cancelled game with Port St. Joe.
The Tigers could not get their offense in gear against the Bulldogs. Blountstown managed 11 first downs with 92 yards on the ground and 15 yards through the air on 4 of 11 completions and one interception.
Taylor County ran 33 rushing plays for 143 yards and completed 16 of 25 passes for 172 yards and they also gave up one interception.
Late in the first quarter, Taylor County scored first on a 43 yard run. The PAT game the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with :07 seconds left in the quarter.
The Tigers responded with their only drive of the game covering 80 yards in 7 plays. Quarterback Tristan King found the endzone from one yard out. A try for two points failed and Taylor County still led, 7-6.
Two fumble recoveries by the Tiger defense would keep the game at 7-6 until halftime.
Taylor County would put together 10 play 54 yard scoring drive in the third quarter with a one yard run. The PAT was no good, but Taylor County led 13-7 with 3:01 remaianing in the third quarter.
Midway the final quarter, the Bulldogs would score on a 28 yard touchdown pass. This drive would cover 68 yards in 8 plays. The PAT was good and Taylor Co. led 20-6.
The final nail in the coffin came when the Bulldogs intercepted a Tiger pass and returned it for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Kayin Martin continues to run the ball hard and led the Tigers’ ground attack with 65 yards n 22 carries and a long run of 29. Aaden Williams added 21 yards on 3 carries. Issac Roberts, Cyion Smith, Curt Ellis, and Kayin Martin each had a pass reception.
Defensively, Ja’Marion Engram led the way with 10 tackles and 2 for loss. Cyion Smith, Taye Dawson and Christian Martin each had 7 tacles. Dawson had 1.5 tackles for loss. Martin had one interception for the Tigers.
King had a good night punting with a 44.8 yard average and a long punt of 62.
This week, Blountstown will make the long trip to Brewton, Alabama, to face the 0-4 W. S. Neal Eagles. Despite their record, the Eagles put up 36 points on an undefeated Marianna team last week in a 49-36 loss. They’ve lost three other high scoring games 29-28, 46-28, and 42-32.
The Tigers will have road games at Sneads and Dixie County before two straight at home agains Northview and Holmes County. Blountstown will close out the season November 1 at Walton. Hopefully, with a few more wins, the Tigers will make it to the playoffs for another year.
