Saving Downtown Blountstown is excited to announce a new project planned for our downtown area. Renowned muralist, Wes Hardin, of Dothan, Alabama, has been commissioned to paint a historic mural on the east side of the old C. C. Corbin Hardware store building. The building is currently occupied by Dewberry Engineering. This location will offer locals and the thousands of travelers who travel through Blountstown every day an unobstructed view of this work of art.
The center of the mural will be the John W. Callahan steamboat which served this area from 1907 to 1923 when it sank about two miles from Wewahitchka. The steamboat was vital to the development of our area and it seems appropriate to pay tribute to the boat which was once called “the queen” of this region’s river steamboats.
Surrounding the image of the Callahan, there will be smaller paintings of other historic pictures of our community. The small photo of the old courthouse will be one of those images. This is a very rough first sketch of what the mural will look like.
Further information on this project will be forthcoming.
