FROM THE CALHOUN COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE Calhoun County Take Stock in Children Council members interviewed local ninth graders Jan. 28 who applied for a Take Stock in Children Scholarship. All students interviewed by Council members did an outstanding job in presenting themselves in a professional manner and in being prepared for the interview.Council Members were pleased to be able to award three scholarships this year. Scholarships were awarded to David Causey, from Blountstown High School and Michaela Strawn and Trevor Wriston, from Altha School. David is the son of Roy and Susan Causey of Blountstown, Michaela is the daughter of Tim and Laura Bailey of Clarksville, and Trevor is the son of Marie Kosmos of Altha. When each of these 9th grade students graduate from high school, their Take Stock in Children Scholarship will be activated. In the meantime, as a scholarship recipient, each student will be provided support in order to be successful through their high school and college years. In addition to a four-year college scholarship, each recipient is provided with a mentor to provide motivation, support, and tutoring, plus continuous monitoring and intervention services to support the student’s educational achievements, along with college and career counseling. In accepting these scholarships, the students will sign performance contracts agreeing to get good grades, exhibit positive behavior, demonstrate a willingness to work with their mentor, and remain drug and crime free. If the students adhere to their contracts, then they receive their four year college scholarships. The four-year scholarships that were awarded to David, Michaela, and Trevor were made possible through monetary donations from people and businesses in our community. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends entirely upon donations received. Donations made to the program stay in our county and go to our students. For information on how you can help support Take Stock in Children with donations or mentoring services, contact Barbara Hathaway at 674-5927, Ext. 21.
