Just before halftime of last Friday night’s Liberty County vs. Port St. Joe football game in Bristol, the unthinkable happened. Chance Gainer, an 18-year-old 2-way starter for the Sharks, collapsed on the field. He was taken by ambulance to Calhoun Liberty Hospital in Blountstown where he later passed away.
The event has left the Port St. Joe community in shock and Panhandle communities are surrounding them with love and prayers.
Gainer was a gifted football and basketball player and a 4.0 student in the classroom. He had scored a touchdown on an earlier series against the Bulldogs. He had recently visited Vanderbilt University where he hoped to attend college.
Schools from Calhoun and Liberty Counties along with others from across the Panhandle attended a luncheon Tuesday at Port St. Joe High School to celebrate Chance Gainer’s life. A GoFundMe page has been created to support Gainer’s family at https://gofund.me/83339f9.
