Potential tropical cyclone could develop into major hurricane by Thursday

The eyes of meteorologists and those living along the Gulf Coast are looking south this week, as a tropical formation currently dubbed Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine continues to develop. There is a high chance that this formation could develop into a hurricane this week, Hurricane Helene. 

Locally, Calhoun County Emergency Management has been monitoring the development of the potential hurricane that is expected to move in our direction when it reaches the warm gulf waters Wednesday.

Calhoun County Emergency Management met with County Commissioners and School Superintendent Darryl Taylor Tuesday morning to make plans for the potential threat.

According to Emergency Management Director Jamie Norris, “With very little information provided at this time, We strongly urge everyone to have all hurricane preparations in place.mSand bags are available at the Calhoun Conty Road Dept. The governor has declared a State of Emergency for 41 counties to include Calhoun County. Calhoun County Board of County Commissioners executed a Local State of Emergency for Calhoun County effective September 23, 2024.
