Pedestrian critical after being struck on SR 69 Monday morning

A 34 year old Blountstown man was in critical condition after he was struck while walking south on the shoulder of SR 69 just south of Mason Road around 7:00 a.m. Monday morning. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report the driver of an SUV involved in the accident was not injured.

According to the report, the GMC Arcadia was traveling southbound on SR 69, just south of Mason Road.  A non-motorist was walking southbound on the south paved shoulder of SR 69 with traffic.  The SUV driver became drowsy and was fatigued from working a midnight shift and dosed off to sleep.  His vehicle traveled out of the travel lane and partially onto the grass shoulder at which time he became awakened.  The driver then applied hard braking and attempted to steer the vehicle back to the left but was unable to avoid a collision with the pedestrian.

The SUV’s front right portion collided with the pedestrian before coming to final rest partially on the paved shoulder and partially in the southbound travel lane.

FHP was assisted at the scene by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Calhoun County EMS.
