Charles Denis Leonard, Sr., age 86, passed away on March 30, 2012, in St. Augustine after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Panama City and raised in Blountstown, he was a fourth generation Floridian.After graduating from the University of Florida in 1949, “Charlie” and his bride Artie Flanders moved to South Florida where he worked in management for Southern Bell for 35 years. An avid fisherman and Gator fan, he was also active in community service. Organizations he was involved in included Methodist Men, Telephone Pioneers, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, UF Alumni Association (Charter Member) and United Way, often presiding over local chapters where they lived in Dade and Palm Beach Counties. He was also a veteran of WWII, having served in the Navy. In 2001 Charlie and Artie moved to St. Johns to be near family.He was predeceased by his parents John Edwin and “Maggie” Self Leonard and in 2003 by his son who was named after him. He is survived by his wife Artie Leonard; brother Dan Leonard (Eloise); daughters Carolyn Love (Doug) and Marsha Bailey (Roger); grandchildren Shelley Baldwin (Mark), Scott Love (Jennifer), Heather Casteele, Mary Lee Lemonde (Adam), Jared Bailey and Jordan Bailey (Shannon); and ten great-grandchildren.Memorial Contributions can be made to the National Parkinson Foundation.
