By Judy LudlowCALHOUN COUNTY EXTENSION DIRECTOROne of the many rewarding things the Calhoun County Extension Service does is coordinate the selection of the Outstanding Farm Family of the Year. Calhoun County is blessed with a rich farming history, and we have been presenting this award for 56 years. Each year, Farm Families in north Florida are honored by the North Florida Fair, and locally by the Florida Farm Bureau. The Outstanding Farm Family of the Year Award is given to a family whose pride, enthusiasm, and commitment to farming is a way of life. These qualities are also reflected by their interactions with family, community, and colleagues. At the recent Farm Bureau Banquet we were proud to announce that Calhoun County’s 2011 Outstanding Farm Family is the Clifford Newsome Family! Clifford, along with his seven brothers and sisters, was born here in Calhoun County, and grew up closely connected with the land. The Newsome Family farm is diverse in that it grows at least four types of sod, raises beef cattle, horses, and hay. Clifford is also moving some of his land into “silvopasture/multi-cropping” with cattle, forage, and timber. This process is an efficient and integrated approach to farming multiple agricultural products. The Newsome Family supports community youth sports, and their youngest daughter is a member of 4-H and FFA. Please join us in congratulating the Clifford Newsome Family as Calhoun County’s 2011 Outstanding Farm Family!
