The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office announces that arrests have been made following an investigation into an alleged inmate battery at the Calhoun County Jail.
After being placed into open population following the booking process, an inmate reported being battered by two other inmates.
During the investigation, the inmate alleged that the incident was orchestrated by detention deputies. Security camera footage was reviewed and compared with statements that were gathered.
Due to the nature of the allegations involving agency personnel, The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was requested to conduct an independent investigation.
As a result of this investigation, the following charges were filed:
- Two inmates, Carlton Peavy and Christopher Branham, were charged with Battery by Detainee.
- Detention Deputy James Mason Coleman was charged with Principal to Battery by Detainee.
- Detention Deputy Elishah Jerome Shiver was charged with Principal to Battery by Detainee and Official Misconduct.
Detention deputies Elishah Shiver and James Coleman are no longer employed by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is committed to transparency, impartiality, and maintaining the public’s trust. While the Sheriff’s Office maintains an Internal Affairs Unit to investigate allegations involving agency personnel, the nature of the allegations in this case warranted an independent investigation by FDLE. This decision was made to ensure accountability, impartiality, and public confidence in the investigation process. When allegations involve our own personnel, this agency believes they must be addressed openly and responsibly to maintain the integrity of the profession and the trust of the community we serve.
