JAMES ALFORD

Mr. James Alford, 91, of Blountstown, FL, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, in Blountstown. Mr. Alford was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Dellwood, FL, and lived in Calhoun County most of his life. He was retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of duty. James had a very impressive military career, stationed at U.S. Naval Training Command in Norfolk, VA, U.S. Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, TX. O.P. Dev Station in Key West, FL, New York Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet, NSG in Bayonne, NJ. He served aboard the carriers, USS Lexington, USS Hancock, USS Philippine Sea, USS Greenwich Bay, USS Ticonderoga and the USS Midway. Mr. Alford also served aboard the destroyers, USS Stormes, USS Maloy, and PC 1121. James was of the Holiness faith. Survivors include one brother, R.L. Alford, of Blountstown; two sisters, Mildred Peck and Betty Watson, both of Tallahassee; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Peavy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Waterman officiating. Interment followed in the Edenfield Cemetery in Altha with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his honor to the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, Post Office Box 215, Blountstown, FL 32424.
