Former inmate files suit against Tatum, Revell

A former jail inmate has filed a federal lawsuit against Calhoun County Sheriff David Tatum and former Liberty County Sheriff Harrell Wood Revell, alleging they failed to protect her while she was behind bars. Miranda L. Hartzell, 27, is seeking a jury trial alleging she was sexually assaulted on several occasions by former transport officer, William Strawn, also named in the lawsuit. Hartzell alleges she was assaulted during transports to court and appointments while she was housed at the Liberty County Jail in 2007. She was technically a Calhoun County inmate, but all females are jailed in a Liberty County Jail dorm. Hartzell was sentenced to prison during 2007 and served two years at Gadsden Correctional Institution on charges of grand theft and trafficking in stolen property. She alleges one assault occurred when Strawn transported her from the prison to court. Hartzell was released from prison Jan. 1, 2009. She filed the federal lawsuit nearly three years later on Nov. 1, 2011.
