County opts out of septic tank program

Calhoun County Commissioners are taking advantage of an amended law allowing them to “opt out” of septic tank requirements that could be costly to local residents. Two years ago, the Florida Legislature passed an “Onsite Sewage Evaluation and Assessment Program” which would require that all septic tanks be evaluated every five years. The law further requires septic tanks be replaced if deemed necessary by the person or firm evaluating. An attempt last year to appeal the law was unsuccessful, but it has been amended, allowing county governing bodies to take steps to opt out of the program. Calhoun County Commissioners took those steps last month and the action was unanimously passed June 5. What does this mean to you as a citizen of Calhoun County? It means you will still be making your own decisions regarding your septic tank.
