MALONE, JANUARY 5—The Wildcats began the New Year hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Malone Tigers but at the final buzzer they found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard.At halftime the Junior Varsity Wildcats (1-5) trailed only 22-18. However, a 14-7 Tigers’ run in the third quarter led to another Malone (10-2) victory, 42-34.The Top Cat in scoring was Ryan Wood with 10 points. Also, he led Altha in rebounding with 3 and he blocked a shot attempt. Kent Rogers rang up 7 points, including a 3-pointer. Caleb Chew chalked up 6 points, snagged 3 rebounds and he had a steal. Tyler McClellan came away with 4 points, 3 rebounds and a steal. P.J. Iler knocked down a 3-pointer for his first points of the season and he had a rebound. Both Corey Barton and Kyler Dew chipped in 2 points apiece. Barton pulled down 2 rebounds while Dew blocked a shot attempt and he snagged a rebound.On a cold night the varsity Wildcats found themselves up against a Malone team that was red-hot from 3-point land. The Tigers’ knocked down 10 of 13 from beyond the arc leading to their 68-24 victory.Tyler Hamilton led the Wildcats with 10 points and on the boards by pulling down 5 rebounds. Will Rogers was money with 2 3-pointers for 6 points and he had 2 assists. Ethan Ellis came away with 5 points (including a 3-pointer) and he blocked a shot attempt. Anthony Young played string music with a 3-pointer and he cleared 2 rebounds.ALTHA, JANUARY 7–Before Alabama won their 13th national championship on the gridiron, both Wildcats’ basketball teams won on the hardwood last Thursday night for the first time this season.Caleb Chew sank 3 of 4 free throw opportunities in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to give the junior varsity Wildcats (2-6) a 26-23 win over the Panthers from John Paul II (0-6). Chew also had an assist, a rebound and a steal in the game.Tyler McClellan and Ryan Wood led Altha with 6 points apiece. McClellan did some major window washing as he ripped down 8 rebounds and he collected a steal. Wood pulled down 4 rebounds and he had 3 steals. Kent Rogers posted 7 points along with 2 steals, 2 rebounds, and an assist. P.J. Iler knocked down 1 of his 2 3-pointers. Both Jae Fielder and Jeremy O’Bryan chipped in 2 points apiece. Fielder snagged 2 rebounds while O’Bryan had 3 steals, an assist, he blocked a shot attempt, and he snared a rebound.Having the best night of his varsity career, Tyler Hamilton was on fire as he led all scorers with 24 points and he helped the Wildcats post their first win of the season, 58-46, over district foe John Paul II (3-9; 2-3, 1A-District 2). Also, Hamilton led the Wildcats (1-7; 1-5, 1A-District 2) with 6 rebounds along with a blocked shot attempt and a steal.Will Rogers was money with 6-of-6 from the free throw line and 2 3-pointers on his way to a 14 point night. He was also credited with 2 rebounds and an assist. Posting 10 points along with 2 steals and a rebound was Jacob Warner. Ethan Ellis posted 7 points, snared 3 rebounds and he had an assist. Anthony Young sank 3 of 4 free throws and he collected 2 rebounds. BRISTOL, JANUARY 8–Last Friday the Junior Varsity Wildcats held a 13-10 halftime lead over Liberty County. However, the Bulldogs put together a 14-6 fourth quarter run to take a 31-21 decision over the Wildcats (2-7).Leading the Wildcats in the scoring column were Caleb Chew and Jeremy O’Bryan who both posted 5 points each in the game. Chew pulled down a rebound and he had a steal. O’Bryan cleared a rebound, was credited with an assist and recorded a steal. Tyler McClellan and Kent Rogers tallied 4 points apiece. McClellan had a team-leading 3 rebounds. Rogers led the Wildcats with 2 steals and he had an assist. Jae Fielder rounded out the scoring with 3 points and he snagged a rebound.Clutch free throw shooting by Jacob Warner and Will Rogers wrapped around a steal by Anthony Young in the game’s final minute gave the varsity Wildcats (2-7) a 46-41 come-from-behind win over the Liberty County Bulldogs. Altha’s Will Rogers led all scorers with 25 points (including 3 3-pointers and 6 of 7 free throws) (As a team the Wildcats shot 72% from the free throw line, knocking down 13 of 18 attempts.) Also, Rogers had 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Jacob Warner sank 5 of 6 free throws on his way to a 7 point night, ripped down a team-leading 6 rebounds and he had 2 steals. Tyler Hamilton was good for 6 points, cleared 4 rebounds and was credited with a steal. Ethan Ellis put up 5 points (including a 3-pointer), snagged a rebound, and recorded a steal. Anthony Young sank a 3-pointer, had 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal.This past Tuesday the Wildcats hosted the Munroe Bobcats (check next week’s issue for game details). Tomorrow (Thursday) they will travel to Tallahassee to take on FAMU High. Junior Varsity action gets underway at 4:30 pm (CT) followed by the varsity game at 6 pm (CT). On Friday Altha entertains the Aucilla Christian Warriors in a 4:30 pm (CT) junior varsity game and the varsity contest tips off at 6 pm (CT). GO WILDCATS!!!
