Bristol man found guilty of murder and leaving the scene

Tyrone Atkins, Jr., of Bristol was found guilty last week in Liberty County for murder and leaving the scene involving a death.  Atkins was sentenced to life in prison and a concurrent five years, according to an FHP report.

The sentencing is the result of an incident that began on January 28, 2021 on NW Gobbler Court, west of NW Turkey Creek Road in Bristol.  According to the FHP report Atkins, 18 at the time, got into  a physical altercation with Zack Ikeland of Bristol, also 18 at the time.

Atkins, upset with the outcome of the altercation, later returned driving a sports utility vehicle into Ikeland at a speed near 70 miles per hour.

After striking the victim, Atkins fled the scene on foot.

Originally reported as a traffic crash, traffic homicide investigators within the Florida Highway Patrol quickly determined the incident was in fact a premeditated murder.  The Florida Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene of the investigation by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and Liberty County EMS.
